The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and its founder and longtime conductor, Daniel Barenboim, are bound together by more than just an artistic collaboration. Since 1999, the ensemble has embodied the idea of fostering dialogue through shared music-making - across cultural and political boundaries. Barenboim’s work with young musicians from the Middle East is not merely an artistic project, but a lived conviction: sound as a space for encounter, precision as a prerequisite for mutual listening. From this commitment to dialogue emerges an evening that juxtaposes musical extremes. Hardly any symphony begins as somberly and menacingly as Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished,” which pits enigmatic soundscapes against the flowery bliss of a waltz. A pocket-sized milestone in music history can be experienced through excerpts from the instrumental version of Richard Wagner’s opera “Tristan and Isolde”: The opera stage had never before witnessed a work so harmonically daring and groundbreaking in so many respects. Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Eroica” was a symphony of unprecedented length, difficulty, and heroism, composed during Napoleon Bonaparte’s wars of conquest.
