Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (2G)

Brilliant orchestral culture

06 June 2022, Elbphilharmonie, Great Hall

Dmitri Shostakovich was a fan of the Vienna Philharmonic. There is no record of when exactly the composer met the ensemble, which was founded in 1842 as the "Philharmonic Academy". In 1955, however, after attending a concert on the occasion of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera, he spoke very highly of the "brilliant orchestral culture" that the Austrian musicians had developed together. Shostakovich's own 9th Symphony was already several years old at this point, but like so many of his works, had been banned from performance. Only Stalin's death brought the work, which confronts the dictatorship with a good dose of sarcasm and thus astonishing cheerfulness, to light and thus onto the concert stages. Much has changed since then, of course, but the orchestral culture of the Viennese and the special nature of Shostakovich's 9th Symphony persist to this day. And like the composer, ProArte is also a fan of the Viennese, who can therefore be experienced with us for the second time this season.
