To clap after a movement or not? The question does not arise in this concert: the two composers that Christian Thielemann has put on the programme for his ProArte concert with the Vienna Philharmonic have refreshingly clear views on this. Felix Mendelssohn found the intermediate applause »mood-killing«, and in his grandiose »Scottish« Symphony, he consistently allows all movements to merge into one another. Richard Strauss, too, does not allow the protagonist of his »Heldenleben« (heroic life) any premature homage. Only at the end of his journey is he allowed to collect the laurels he deserves – which, with this orchestra and this conductor, will certainly be plentiful.
