CREATION OF A GIANT

Anton Bruckner's symphonies have been part of the "mother tongue" of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra since the chief conductor era of Günter Wand. On the 200th anniversary of the Austrian symphonist's birth, however, they will be a special focus in the 2024/2025 season. After his recently celebrated interpretations of the Seventh and Fourth in Hamburg, Chief Conductor Alan Gilbert will now conduct the longest and most powerful Bruckner Symphony No. 8.
It is "the creation of a giant", said the otherwise not exactly squeamish reviewer Hugo Wolf after the extremely successful premiere in Vienna in 1892, "and surpasses all of the master's other symphonies in terms of spiritual dimension, fruitfulness and grandeur." The many scruples and revisions in the work's creation process had therefore paid off: in fact, the premiere of the Eighth was not only the greatest success of Bruckner's life. It was also a veritable victory over his otherwise stubborn opponents in Vienna. Even his arch-enemy Johannes Brahms is said to have reluctantly admitted: "Bruckner is a great genius after all."
