Munich Philharmonic / Daniel Harding

Major works

16. April 2024, 8:00 PM – Elbpilharmonie, Großer Saal

Daniel Hrding is by no means an unkown quantity to the Munich Philharmonic. The British conductor is a regular on the podium of the tradition-steeped orchestra, which celebrated its 130th anniversary at the beginning of the season. An eventful time full of musical highlights: Hardly any other orchestra brings the great repertoire to life as splendidly and colorfully as the Philharmonic from the Bavarian capital.

First of all, there is Gustav Mahler's mighty Symphony No. 5. At the time of ots premiere in 1904, the hugely scored work with its five expansive movements went beyond anything previously imaginable. In the midst of an infernal orchestral frenzy, the fourth movement alone provides relaxation. Its use in Visconti's film "Death in Venice" made this enchanting Adagietto Mahler's most popular creation.

With his symphonic poem "Tapiola", a musical evocation of the Finnish forest god Tapio, Jean Sibelius composed his last major orchestral work in 1926.
