A Poet of the Piano
November 2nd 2022, 8:00 PM - Elbphilharmonie, Great Hall
For Thomas Hengelbrock, it's a return to his old "living room." In the Great Hall of the Elbphilharmonie, he conducts the Munich Philharmonic with works by Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Wagner. The soloist is the world-renowned pianist Alexandre Kantorow.
Hengelbrock and the Munich Philharmonic have enjoyed a longstanding collaboration. As the former head of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the conductor is well known in the Hanseatic city. His extremely successful recording of Johannes Brahms' four symphonies also dates from this time. The composer, who was born in Hamburg in 1833, spent 14 years working on his hymn-like first symphony in order to do justice to his great model Beethoven. Sergei Rachmaninoff was much faster: he composed his first piano concerto at the age of only 17 as a student at the Moscow Conservatory. The young Frenchman Kantorov is an ideal interpreter for this virtuoso work. The "poet of the piano," as the London Telegraph acclaims him, has been conquering the hearts of the international classical music world since winning the prestigious Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019.
