He was one of the legendary stars of his day. She is an absolute star of our times. In 2019, Cecilia Bartoli unveiled her Farinelli album to the world, dedicated to arguably the most famous castrato of the Baroque period. She caused quite a stir with the cross-gender cover, which features the diva sporting a beard and black nail polish. She earned lavish praise for the album’s musical prowess however: »Her singing astonishes with its virtuosity that has been constant for decades and a perfect balance of refinement and emotional immediacy,« writes FonoForum, summing up what sets this extraordinary singer apart with her warmly radiant mezzo-soprano voice: She simply succeeds in everything.
