Elbphilharmonie, Great Hall

Mahler, the New York Philharmonic, and Gustavo Dudamel – a musical combination of exceptional promise. After all, Gustav Mahler played a significant role in shaping the orchestra's artistic identity during his tenure as its Music Director. Gustavo Dudamel, recently appointed Music and Artistic Director of this distinguished American orchestra, is equally at home in Mahler's rich and emotional sound world. With Mahler's Symphony No. 5, the New York Philharmonic brings one of the composer's most beloved works to the stage of the Elbphilharmonie. Although the symphony premiered in Cologne rather than New York, it has long become one of the orchestra's signature pieces. Spanning a powerful emotional spectrum – from the solemn funeral march and exuberant finale to soaring melodies and joyful dance rhythms – the work centers on the ethereal and delicate Adagietto, a dreamlike vision of a better world and a deeply personal declaration of love from Mahler to his wife.
